A little bit of history:
A part of the dam built in the 16th century, which went through the grazing of the city in the direction of Sarkandaugava, also includes the present Ganību dambis, corresponds to the street trail. The oldest street name is Ganibu Dam (Weidendamm). In 1846, in the address book of Riga, the street referred to as the Ganību Dambja street (Weidendammstrasse), in 1861 – under the name 1. Ganību Dambja street (I Weidendammstrasse). In 1885, it was renamed the 1st Ganius Dam (Der Erste Weidendamm), renamed Pulkveža Brieža Street in 1923. During the Soviet occupation from 1940, as Sverdlovskaya Street, during the German occupation of VIII in 1941 as Weidendamm, then in Kalpakstrasse (together with the Ganību dambis), from IV of 1942 as I Weidendamm. In 1990 the name “I Ganibu Dam” was renovated, renamed Pulkveža Brieza Street in 1995.
